Reggie Sanders Headlines ‘Jack Buck Celebrity Night’ Auction with Tony LaRussa
The 14th Annual ‘Jack Buck Celebrity Night with the Stars’ sports auction topped the $40,000 mark for the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club’s sports program on July 17, 2005, at the Missouri Athletic Club. Event sponsors joined Redbird skipper Tony LaRussa’s National League Championship ‘Dream Team’ and more than 200 attendees celebrated the memory of the beloved Hall of Fame Broadcaster Jack Buck.
Club President, CEO & Co-Founder Martin L. Mathews presented the “That’s A Winner” Award to Cardinals Outfielder Reggie Sanders - who received a standing ovation for braving a recently fractured foot to attend the gala. Two of Mr. Buck’s daughters joined Mathews for the presentation: Julie Buck-Brooks and KPLR-TV, WB 11 Special Reporter Christine Buck, the event’s emcee. Other highlights were silent and high-octane live auctions led by The Big 550 KTRS’ David Schumacher, an elegant sit-down dinner, and fanfare by Cardinals organist Ernie Hays. Local Muny Teens performer and Club Member Alexandria Butler opened the program with a rousing performance of ‘God Bless America’. Other youth participants served as hospitality delegates and helped present auction items to the highest bidders.

Club alumnus and Lead Work Productions President Jamie ‘King James’ Dennis performed the ‘Maleness to Manhood’ theme song, Silver Telly Award winning ‘Baseball in the USA’ and a ‘Jack Buck’ tribute rap. Mathews-Dickey VP, PR & Special Events Barbara A. Washington concluded the evening by performing ‘If I Can Help Somebody’ as a tribute to LaRussa.
One representative from each $1,000 Dream Team sponsor ‘pulled for their position’ on LaRussa’s ‘Dream Team’. They received an autographed photo with him and signature of the Cardinal whose name was pulled. LaRussa shared team highlights and surprised the audience with a number of special packages - including an Albert Pujols bat, hat and ball that sent the auction bids soaring into the upper deck!
