“Malesness to Manhood” Workshop Series Focuses on College, Career, Cultural and Moral Development
Seventy-five young men, ages 11-18, will enjoy a full plate of exciting college, career, cultural and moral development activities at the sixth annual “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series.” The program’s schedule includes:
- Friday, June 17 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) - Program participants attend informative seminars on The Financial Aid Process, College Life and College Internet Research/ACT Preparation Tips. A who’s who list of more than 30 local and national colleges take part in the college fair at Mathews-Dickey. Open to the public, more than 700 young men and women attend.
- Saturday, June 18 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) - The career day activities begin at 8 a.m. at the Marriott Pavilion Hotel, One S. Broadway Ave. Fifty young men are paired one-on-one with male business professionals as career-building partners for the afternoon. Five $1,000 college scholarships are also awarded to graduating seniors at the event. Following the event, students hop on the tour bus for field trips to the St. Louis Art Museum, movie and pizza party.
- Sunday, June 19 (9:30 a.m. to noon) - The event concludes with church services at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m. Services are presided over by the Rev. William G. Gillespie, the church’s pastor and Mathews-Dickey board chairman.

The 2004 event featured KSDK NewsChannel 5’s Sports Director Rene Knott, who presented the opening remarks for the June 18 College Fair. Also, McDonald’s Owner/Operator Mike Proctor introduced the university representatives and led the unveiling of the McDonald’s Academic Excellence Awards Plaque featuring their three $2,500 college scholarship winners.
Charles Thompson, chief technology officer, District Columbia Public Schools, made the trek in from the nation’s capital to provide the keynote address and Randy Karraker, sportscaster, The 550 KTRS emceed the event. Also, Karraker presided over a panel discussion that featured: “Broadcast News: Careers in TV” by Johnny Little, executive producer, KMOV-TV, Channel 4; “Construction: A Blueprint for Career Success” by Todd Weaver, president, Legacy Building Group; “Corporate & Commercial Communications” by Paul Dusseault, senior vice president, senior vice president & partner, Fleishman-Hillard, Inc.; “Entrepreneurship: Paving Your Own Career Success” by James Williams, Jr., president, ESTEL Foods, Inc. (McDonald’s); and “Marketing Yourself for the Job Search” by Eric Hutchins, business development director, JWT Specialized Communications.

Later that day, the program participants traveled to the St. Louis Art Museum, where Director Brent Benjamin personally greeted them and gave them a guided tour. Lunch was provided by McDonald“s compliments of Owner/Operator Roy Williams.
The “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series” is an outgrowth of the Club’s “A Few Good Men Leadership” project and the counterpart to the nationally recognized, “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program for young women. The event was launched in 2000 with Ebony Magazine Art Director Raymond Thomas serving as the first keynote speaker and designing the commemorative logo.
Mathews-Dickey is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 United Way member agency, which provides educational, recreational and cultural programs for more than 40,000 young men and women annually.
