Mathews-Dickey Embraces Young Men on Journey from “Malesness to Manhood”
One-hundred young men, ages 11-18, enjoy a full plate of exciting college, career, cultural and moral development activities at the eighth annual “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series.” The program’s schedule includes:
· Friday, June 15 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Program participants attend informative seminars on The Financial Aid Process, College Life and College Internet Research/ACT Preparation Tips. A who’s who list of more than 30 local and national colleges take part in the college fair at Mathews-Dickey. Open to the public, more than 700 young men and women attend.
· Saturday, June 16 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) The career day activities begin at 8 a.m. at the St. Louis Pavilion Hotel, One S. Broadway Ave. Fifty young men are paired one-on-one with male business professionals as career-building partners for the afternoon. Five $1,000 college scholarships are also awarded to graduating seniors at the event. A $100 contribution covers the mentorship fee, which supportseducational supplies, college scholarships, and field trips. Each young man was encouraged to talk about his aspirations, while the mentor shared the benefit of his work and life experience. A ceremonial exchange of business cards occurred, with future activities voluntary. Following the event, students hop on the tour bus for field trips to the St. Louis Art Museum, movie and pizza party.
· Sunday, June 17 (9:30 a.m. ) The event concludes with church services at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m. Services are presided over by the Rev. William G. Gillespie, the church’s pastor and Mathews-Dickey board chairman.
The 2006 event was a very moving and informative program for the Club’s young men. Nestle Purina PetCare Co. Retail Development Director Everett Horne provided the welcome at the college fair, which included a financial aid presentation by Tim Hercules, Saint Louis University student financial services counselor; a college life session by Vince Caesar, Washington University assistant director of admissions; and an Internet and ACT research seminar by Cliff Ellis, A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. information technology analyst.
At the June 17 Career Day, Clayco President & CEO Robert Clark provided the welcome and the keynote address was presented by John Eyres, author, “Showin’ Ya The Ropes.” ESPN Radio Broadcaster Randy Karraker lead a career panel discussion, featuring: “Communication: A Mass Appeal” by Andre Jackson, business editor, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; “Creating a Work of Art” by Daniel Hodges, artist, Hodges Fine Art; “Careers in the Insurance Industry” by Warren Robinson, district manager & principal, American Family Insurance; “Building Careers in Construction” by Tom Sieckhaus, vice president, Clayco; and “Money Talk: A Career Spreadsheet” by Michael Weiss, manager, Ernst & Young, LLP. One-thousand dollar college scholarships were presented to six graduating seniors by St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George and Club President, CEO & Co-Founder Martin L. Mathews.

The Career Day kicked off with breakout seminars on moral development and etiquette, and concluded with a ceremonial exchange of business cards between mentors/students. Lead Work Productions President and Mathews-Dickey Alumnus Jamie ‘King James’ Dennis penned and performed a new program theme song. In the afternoon, the youth enjoyed field trips to view ‘Captive Passage’ at the Missouri History Museum, the movie ‘Cinderella Man’ at the Chase Park Plaza and pizza at Lombardo‘s.
The afternoon of June 17 was followed by cultural field trips, which included an excursion to the St. Louis Art Museum with a welcome by Director Brent Benjamin,a pizza party and a movie. The closing church services with Board Chairman Rev. William Gillespie occurred at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church, at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, June 18.
The culmination of the weekend was Sunday services with Pastor & Club Board Chairman William G. Gillespie at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church.
The “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series” is an outgrowth of the Club’s “A Few Good Men Leadership” project and the counterpart to the nationally recognized, “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program for young women. The event was launched in 2000 with Ebony Magazine Art Director Raymond Thomas serving as the first keynote speaker and designing the commemorative logo.
Mathews-Dickey is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 United Way member agency, which provides educational, recreational and cultural programs for more than 40,000 young men and women annually.
