Mathews-Dickey Embraces Young Men on Journey from “Malesness to Manhood”

One-hundred young men, ages 11-18, enjoy a full plate of exciting college, career, cultural and moral development activities at the seventh annual “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series.”  The program’s schedule includes:

·           Friday, June 16 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) — Program participants attend informative seminars on The Financial Aid Process, College Life and College Internet Research/ACT Preparation Tips. A who’s who list of more than 30 local and national colleges take part in the college fair at Mathews-Dickey.  Open to the public, more than 700 young men and women attend.

·           Saturday, June 17 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) — The career day activities begin at 8 a.m. at the St. Louis Pavilion Hotel, One S. Broadway Ave.   Fifty young men are paired one-on-one with male business professionals as career-building partners for the afternoon.  Five $1,000 college scholarships are also awarded to graduating seniors at the event.  Following the event, students hop on the tour bus for field trips to the St. Louis Art Museum, movie and pizza party.

·           Sunday, June 18 (9:30 a.m. ) — The event concludes with church services at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m. Services are presided over by the Rev. William G. Gillespie, the church’s pastor and Mathews-Dickey board chairman.

Mathews-Dickey presented five $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors and paired 75+ young men, ages 12-18, with mentors at the sixth annual ‘Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series’ Career Day on June 18, 2005. The Big 550 KTRS’ Randy Karraker emceed the event, and Fire Chief Sherman George offered the keynote address.

One of the five scholarships presented was dedicated in memory of the late Gold-Record Selling R&B Artist Tyrone Davis, who generously shared his time and talents to raise much-needed funds for the Club’s sports program.

Davis’ wife Anne traveled to St. Louis from Chicago for the occasion. The career panel discussion featured: ‘Communication: A Mass Appeal’ by Larry Starks, sports editor, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; ‘Making a Difference: Careers in Public Service’ by Mike Evans, consultant, Gloster Inc.; ‘Marketing: Careers in Retail’ by Everett Horne, retail development director, Nestle’ Purina PetCare Co.; and ‘Taking Stock: A Career in Business’ by Raphael Pierce, vice president, trading, Peabody Energy. INTERCO Charitable Trust Administrator Mike Loynd provided the welcome.

The Career Day kicked off with breakout seminars on moral development and etiquette, and concluded with a ceremonial exchange of business cards between mentors/students. Lead Work Productions President and Mathews-Dickey Alumnus Jamie ‘King James’ Dennis penned and performed a new program theme song. In the afternoon, the youth enjoyed field trips to view ‘Captive Passage’ at the Missouri History Museum, the movie ‘Cinderella Man’ at the Chase Park Plaza and pizza at Lombardo‘s.

More than 300 young men and women attended a free college fair on June 17, at Mathews-Dickey. The fair included local/national college booths and presentations on financial aid, college life and internet research/ACT preparations. Irl Engelhardt, chairman & CEO, Peabody Energy offered opening remarks and SSM Health Care VP, Clinical Information Systems Joe King was the closing speaker.

The culmination of the weekend was Sunday services with Pastor & Club Board Chairman William G. Gillespie at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church.

The “Maleness to Manhood Workshop Series” is an outgrowth of the Club’s “A Few Good Men Leadership” project and the counterpart to the nationally recognized, “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program for young women. The event was launched in 2000 with Ebony Magazine Art Director Raymond Thomas serving as the first keynote speaker and designing the commemorative logo.

Mathews-Dickey is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 United Way member agency, which provides educational, recreational and cultural programs for more than 40,000 young men and women annually.
