Mathews-Dickey Encourages St. Louisans to Follow
In the Footsteps of Jack Buck
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club is celebrating the memory of Hall of Fame Broadcaster Jack Buck by establishing a Walk of Fame “In the Footsteps of Jack Buck” at its entrance. This effort is part of an aggressive $1 Million Operational Reserve Campaign aimed to sustain the Club’s sports, educational and cultural programs to “Save the Children” of St. Louis.
“Jack was actively involved with Mathews-Dickey since 1969,” says the Club’s President, CEO & Co-Founder Martin L. Mathews. “Jack gave the first campaign gift to help us move from the shade tree to the store front. As the emcee for that year’s athletic banquet, Jack encouraged others to help and ‘get the job done.’ Later, it was his dream to raise $1 million to help ‘Save the Children.’”
Although Jack did not live to see the dream of a $1 million reserve fund fulfilled, a team of leaders, who hold the Club and the late broadcaster dear, have helped move the effort to within 75 percent of its goal. On April 24, Edward Jones Managing Partner James D. Weddle announced a $500,000 pledge by the firm and threw out the ceremonial first pitch that evening at Busch Stadium with Fox Broadcaster Joe Buck. Also taking part in the on-field ceremony were Mathews, Mathews-Dickey VP, PR & Special Events Barbara Washington, campaign general chairman and AmerenUE Senior Vice President Richard Mark, honorary co-chair Carole Buck, KPLR-TV Special Reporter Christine Buck, KLOU’s Julie Buck, St. Louis Cardinals President Mark Lamping, St. Louis Fire Department Chief Sherman George. Honorary co-chairs for the campaign include NBC/HBO Broadcaster Bob Costas and Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa.

The “In the Footsteps of Jack Buck” campaign component, headed up Chairperson Richard Mark, offers contributors at the $10,000 level an opportunity to be inducted into the walk of fame and receive a special commemorative gift featuring the imprint of the broadcast legend’s shoe. Mathews-Dickey alumni chairman and chief executive officer Michael V. Roberts, co-chair and alumni President and Chief Operating Officer Roberts Broadcasting Steve Roberts, were the first sponsors at this level and are leading the charge to generate support among fellow alumni at all levels.
The $1 million fund supports future initiatives and collaborative programs between law enforcement, schools, clergy, businesses and the community. Mathews-Dickey has helped more than one million young men and women find respect, restraint and responsibility through everything from baseball to swimming and cheerleading. The Club provide a safe place youth can go for tutoring and technology training, career programs, mentoring and college preparation, health and wellness programs and help with scholarships.
