Barbara Washington Releases Two Gospel CDs to Benefit Mathews-Dickey The Sky is the Limit Scholarship Fund
Barbara A. Washington, the vice president of public relations & special events at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club, has recently recorded and released two gospel CDs to benefit “The Sky is the Limit” college scholarship fund. The goal is to raise $40,000 from the sale of the 2,000 CDs at $20 each. Seasons Changing is a set of original, contemporary gospel songs, penned and produced by her son, Da’ Singer, a.k.a. Jamie “King James” Dennis. Down by the Riverside is a collection of traditional gospel classics, featuring special musical appearances by Alvin Jett & the Phat noiZ, Vera Boldin, Andre Boyd, Marvin F. Cockrell, Doug Flagg and Tim Huskey of Collage, Gateway Jazz Quartet, University of Missouri St. Louis Chancellor Dr. Thomas George, Contemporary Productions Owner Steve Schankman, and Tony Simmons. Washington’s sister Jackie Williams and niece River Fronczak provide backing vocals, as does Da’ Singer.
“The purpose of Down by the Riverside is to share some of my favorite gospel classics and help young women obtain their college education,” said Washington. “This recording evokes memories of hearing the sounds of traveling musicians playing on riverboats down the muddy Mississippi.”
“It was a labor of love to pen these 10 songs for my mother and help such a worthy cause,” said Da’ Singer about Seasons Changing. “This contemporary-yet-traditional gospel CD allows you to dance, have fun and praise the most high all at once.”
In a career spanning 20+ years at the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club, Washington has created many acclaimed youth programs, raised millions of dollars and received numerous local and national awards. In 2004, Washington released “Calvary Lord,” a gospel CD that raised $40,000 to establish a scholarship foundation for the Mathews-Dickey “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program. That album was dedicated to Washington’s late mother, Willie Mae Washington. Mayor Francis Slay hosted a special 50th Birthday CD Release concert at City Hall and presented Washington the City of St. Louis Crystal Paperweight in honor of her achievements.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2009, “The Sky is the Limit” is a two-part program that provides 250+ young women with a window to a world of career opportunities. It connects them with businesswomen mentors who offer advice and internships as well as the possibility college scholarships. Arrays of top-flight female executives are presenters at the “Women in Careers Workshop,” from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 25, at St. Charles Community College. Part two is the career-readiness luncheon, held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 15, at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. All 250 young women are paired with their mentors from our various companies who sponsor lunch for the student and themselves. There are $1,000 college scholarships presented to graduating seniors based upon academic excellence, community service and extra-curricular participation.
Major sponsors of the benefit CD are Joan Callis and The E. Walter Hausstette Charitable Foundation. For more information and/or to purchase CDs, contact Barbara Washington or Bill Fronczak at (314) 382-5952, ext. 234.
