Mathews-Dickey, Centene Team Up To Build Healthy Minds & Bodies Via Education at “Say Amen” Banquet

NBC “Today” Show Saturday edition meteorologist Janice Huff shined the spotlight on “Education: Building Healthy Minds and Bodies” as keynote speaker for the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club’s 18th Annual “Say Amen” Banquet on August 18, at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark.   Youth participants, garbed in representative attire ranging from football uniforms to graduation caps-and-gowns, brought forth the $250,000 oversized check representing the event fund-raising proceeds.

Centene Corporation Senior Vice President, Secretary & General Counsel Keith Williamson provided welcome remarks on behalf of lead chairman and Centene chief executive Michael F. Neidorff.  Later, he joined co-chair Pat Mercurio, Bank of America Missouri president, in presenting the check to Club President, CEO & Co-Founder Martin L. Mathews.

The fun-filled evening, emceed by KMOX Radio’s Jon Grayson, featured a number of local media luminaries.  KSDK “Today in St. Louis” Co-Anchor Art Holliday introduced Huff, and KMOX Radio VP & General Manager David Ervin and St. Louis Post-Dispatch Assistant Sports Editor Lori Shontz presented awards.  Club directors also bestowed honors: Rev. Earl Nance, Jr., Club vice chairman and pastor, Greater Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church; Dr. Mary Ellen Burford, an education administrator and the Club’s board secretary; Richard Mark, Ameren UE vice president, Missouri Energy Delivery; and Rev. William G. Gillespie, the Club’s board chairman and pastor, Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church.

The program opened with a high-energy performance of the specially commissioned rap, “Building Healthy Minds & Bodies with Mathews-Dickey and Centene” by Lead Work Productions President Jamie “King James” Dennis.  The Best Talent Center’s dancers accompanied Dennis and later performed “Miami.”  Collage supplied plenty of crowd-pleasing pop favorites, Club VP, PR & Special Events Barbara Washington performed “God Bless America” and PR & Special Events Director Bill Fronczak got the crowd on their feet with “Mustang Sally.”  Earlier in the evening Washington presented the “Soaring Eagle” to Huff during the Anheuser-Busch Sponsor Reception.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers from St. Louis area corporations play a vital role as reading, writing and math tutors, technology instructors and career-building mentors in the Club’s Education Program.  “The Sky is the Limit” and “Maleness to Manhood” initiatives have paired 4,000 young people from 18 school districts with mentors and awarded more than $350,000 in college scholarships in 13 years.

The 19th Annual “Say Amen” Banquet is set for 5 p.m., Saturday, August 16, at the St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel.   The Education Program fund-raiser is chaired by Brown Shoe Chairman & CEO Ronald Fromm and co-chaired by Michael Neidorff, chairman & CEO of Centene Corporation.
