Businesswomen Mentors Show Young Women That “The Sky Is The Limit”
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club is celebrating the 11th anniversary of “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program. The two-part program includes:
- Women in Careers Workshop - 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc.’s, Benjamin F. Edwards III Learning Center, 2801 Market St. Thelma Cook, president, Cook Consulting Group, has been invited to provide the keynote address on how the socioeconomic status of young women is impacting their career success.
- Career-Readiness Luncheon - 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 25, at the St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel, I-70 at Lambert International Airport. Naomi Earp, vice chair, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, provides the keynote address.
The 10th anniversary was a big success in 2004! The program awarded its 200th $1,000 college scholarship and paired its 2,250th student with a mentor on May 12,2004 at St. Louis Marriott Pavilion. Presenting special remarks to the audience of 250 young women and the same number of businesswomen were Roberta Cohen, community volunteer and wife of KMOV-TV, Channel 4 GM Allan Cohen, and SBC Senior VP Regulatory Compliance Priscilla Hill-Ardoin.
Barbara A. Washington, the Club’s vice president, public relations & special evnts, released a gospel CD, titled “Calvary Lord,” to establish a scholarship foundation for the program. The goal of the fund-raiser is to raise $40,000 to college scholarships by Washington’s birthday on March 17, 2005 at gathering celebrating 25 years of service to the community.

| Channel 4 News Anchor Vickie Newton emceed the program, which included the presentation of 32 $1,000 scholarships to college-bound seniors, the ceremonial exchange of business cards between the students and their new career-building partners and unveiling of a new theme song penned by Club alumnus, professional hip-hop artist and Lead Work Productions President Jamie “King James” Dennis.
Young women represented 18 school districts: Clayton, East St. Louis, Ferguson-Florissant, Francis Howell, Hazelwood, Kirkwood, Ladue, Lindbergh, Maplewood-Richmond Heights, Mehlville, Normandy, Parkway, Pattonville, Ritenour, Riverview Gardens, Rockwood, St. Louis Public Schools and Webster Groves.
As a prelude to the luncheon, the 250 young women attended a full-day of career seminars by 12 professional women on April 24 at Saint Louis University’s Boeing Institute of International Business. Annetta Nunn, the first African-American woman police chief of Birmingham, Ala., encouraged the program participants to be independent and avoid falling into the wrong crowd during her keynote address. KMOX Radio’s Debbie Monterrey emceed the festivities and introduced the scholarship presentations on May 12.
The 2004 event was dedicated in honor of Barbara Brack, wife of Time Inc. Chairman Emeritus Reginald Brack, who is the event’s honorary co-chair and leading scholarship contributor along with Virginia Busch, partner, Busch & Conard, PC.
