Mathews-Dickey Celebrates 13th Anniversary of “The Sky Is The Limit”
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program celebrated its 13th anniversary of providing high-school and junior high school young women with career training, mentors and college scholarships. This year, the program reached an impressive milestone: pairing the 3,000th student with a mentor and achieving the $300,000 mark in scholarships.
Part one, the “Women in Careers Workshop,” took place on April 21, at the St. Charles Community College’s Daniel J. Conoyers Social Sciences Building, 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Dr., St. Charles, MO, 63376. Two-hundred-fifty young women attended 12 career breakout seminars by notable Fortune 500 executives, highlighted by opening remarks by St. Charles Community College Executive Director Edie Kirk, a Career Presentation by The Newberry Group President & CEO Brenda Newberry and Closing Remarks by FBI Special Agent Marita Malone.
Area businesswomen are encouraged to volunteer as mentors for part two, the career-readiness luncheon,on May 2, at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, One S. Broadway in downtown St. Louis. Dr. Judith Craven, an acclaimed anesthesiologist from Houston and board member of Belo Corp., presented the keynote address, and program alumnae Brittany Packnett, instructor, Teach for America Program, served as the emcee.
“In only a couple hours, a mentor can make a lifetime difference in our young women’s lives,” said Barbara A. Washington, the Club’s vice president, public relations & special events and the program’s founder. “We’re so blessed as a community to have concerned women who give their time to inspire our young women to achieve success.”
The mentorship link is formed by a ceremonial business card exchange at the luncheon and future activities are voluntary. Mentors sponsor lunch for themselves and the student, with a portion of the cost applied to scholarships and program materials.
The participating young women represent the following school districts: Clayton, East St. Louis, Ferguson-Florissant, Francis Howell, Hazelwood, Kirkwood, Ladue, Lindbergh, Normandy, Parkway, Pattonville, Ritenour, Riverview Gardens, Rockwood, St. Louis Public Schools and Webster Groves. Twenty-nine graduating seniors received $1,000 college scholarships, including a student from each district and Mathews-Dickey members. The scholarships were based upon community service, extra-curricular participation and academic excellence.
