Mathews-Dickey 14th Annual“The Sky Is The Limit” Gives Mentors
A Chance to Make A Difference in Lives of Young Women
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club believes that, in just a couple hours, a mentor can help a young woman make the right choice between an altercation or a friendship, selling herself short or holding her head up high, dropping out or staying in school, and dependency or self-sufficiency. As a testament to this impact, the 14th Annual “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program celebrated an impressive milestone this year: pairing the 3,250th student with a mentor and achieving the $325,000 mark in scholarships.
Author and retired United States Senator Jean Carnahan provided the keynote address on May 7, at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, One S. Broadway. Emceed by KTVI Fox 2 Reporter Shirley Washington, the luncheon gave young women an opportunity to meet and network with outstanding female business owners and executives. Each professional woman sponsored lunch for a student and herself, at $100 a pairing. Geared for the busy schedules of today’s businesswoman on the move, the mentorship link is formed by a ceremonial business card exchange and future activities are voluntary.
The Women in Careers Workshop preceded the luncheon on April 19 at St. Charles Community College’s Daniel J. Conoyers Social Sciences Building. The program kicked off with opening remarks by workshop sponsor Melanie DiLeo, Missouri state director, community relations, Global Consumer Group Citi, and KTVI Fox 2 General Assignment Reporter Summer Knowles handled the emcee duties. The afternoon session featured “Board Room Chic: Successful Career Styles” by Pam Younger, fashion events director, Macy’s Midwest, and closing remarks by Phakisha Horne, vice president, account management, Allsup Inc.
