Mathews-Dickey To Celebrate “The Sky Is The Limit” 12th Anniversary
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club is celebrating the 12th anniversary of “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program for young women. The two-part program includes:
• Women in Careers Workshop 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at University of Missouri St. Louis Millennium Center, One University Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63121. Two-hundred fifty young women will enjoy an informative array of career seminars.
• Career-Readiness Luncheon 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, at the St. Louis Pavilion Hotel (formerly known as the Marriott Pavilion), One S. Broadway, St. Louis, MO 63102.
Equal Opportunity Employment Vice Chair Naomi Earp helped Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club celebrate the 11th anniversary of “The Sky is the Limit” career-readiness program on May 25, 2005 at St. Louis Airport Marriott.
In her keynote address, Earp lauded the program, which has paired 2,500 junior-high and high-school aged young women with mentors and awarded $231,000 in college scholarships since its inception. Program founder Barbara A. Washington, the Club’s vice president, public relations & special events, announced that her ‘Calvary Lord’ gospel CD generated $40,000 for a new scholarship fund.
At the mentorship luncheon, 250 young women took part in ceremonial exchange of business cards with 250 volunteer career-building partners. Thirty-one $1,000 college scholarships were presented to students from Mathews-Dickey and 18 school districts: Clayton, East St. Louis, Ferguson-Florissant, Francis Howell, Hazelwood, Jennings, Kirkwood, Ladue, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Normandy, Parkway, Pattonville, Ritenour, Riverview Gardens, Rockwood, St. Louis Public Schools and Webster Groves.
Ladue News and Magazine Editor-in-Chief Dorothy Weiner emceed the festivities. Jo Ann Hejna, executive director of event major sponsor The Saigh Foundation, opened the scholarship segment with special remarks. KPLR-TV, WB 11’s Christine Buck led the business card exchange and announced the second half of the scholarship winners. Youth performers included violinists Adeshia and India Session, and vocalists Alexandria Butler, Nikeisha Fortenberry and Alicia Williams - who sung the new ‘The Sky is the Limit’ theme song penned by Club alumnus and Lead Work Productions President Jamie ‘King James’ Dennis.
As a prelude to the luncheon, the Women in Careers Workshop was held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 16. A.G. Edwards Executive Vice President Director of Staff Division Mary Atkin welcomed attendees to the company’s new, state-of-the-art Benjamin F. Edwards III Learning Center. The young women attended a full day of career seminars by 12 professional women. Cook Consulting Group President Thelma Cook offered the career presentation, and Barbara Ellis, a certified financial planner, Lincoln Financial, provided the closing remarks.
