Welcome to Mathews-Dickey

Mathews-Dickey President,

Because they wanted to be the best and they wanted to be winners, it was easy to convince my first baseball team that hard work and determination do pay off. In four decades of working with young people, this message has remained the same. Even though sports are the Club’s number one drawing card, our greater goal is to produce a Scholar Athlete — with programs that address the total needs of young men and women. Not only do we produce champions on the fields, we train members to become leaders in their classrooms, workforce and communities.
As I travel across the country, I am always touched by alumni appreciation for the positive impact Mathews-Dickey made on their lives. These alumni range from professional athletes, to doctors, lawyers, educators, clergymen, business executives and entrepreneurs.
Mathews-Dickey continues to touch the lives of hundreds of families each year. Every day we receive numerous calls from parents and educators seeking counseling and mentors for troubled youth. We respond by recruiting alumni and other volunteers as coaches, tutors and mentors. Students are enrolled in a wholesome array of activities, including career-readiness workshops, culinary arts, crafts, fine & performing arts, swimming, baseball, basketball, football, softball, tutoring, cheerleading, computer training, and educational and leadership seminars. Special friends help us identify membership assistance for deserving families.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Anheuser-Busch, Emerson, Instituform Technologies, Inc., Furniture Brands International, Inc., The May Department Stores Company, the United Way of Greater St. Louis and the companies of Civic Progress for their long-time support of our organization. We also extend special thanks to Board Members Richard Casey, Robert Grote, Charlie Ruprecht and consultant N. Evelyn Williams for their generosity year-after-year.
The future of our country rests with the successful development of our young people. Your continued support will help our youth of today become the successful alumni of tomorrow.
Our Mission
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club, a non-profit organization, was founded in l960 by Martin L. Mathews and the late Hubert “Dickey” Ballentine. Initially, the Club was designed to provide structured recreational activities to neighborhood youths. Today, the Club’s goals are more focused and comprehensive and are aimed at:
- Emphasizing the three Rs’ (Respect, Restraint, Responsibility) through athletic competition and team-building in football, baseball, basketball, swimming, softball, cheerleading and other recreational activities;
- Building self-esteem, while allowing for personal growth, emphasizing the importance of becoming literate and educated citizens;
- Addressing problems stemming from teen idleness (such as substance abuse, gang violence, teen pregnancy and illiteracy);
- Instilling the desire to lead productive lives and to become positive contributors and future leaders in the community;
- Teaching moral, personal, social and cultural development and practices.
Today, the Club serves more than 40,000 young men and women, ages 5-l8, throughout the
St. Louis-metropolitan area. The Club also serves as a meeting center for various community, social and business organizations and as an outreach resource center for troubled youth.
The Club is a non-profit, 501 (c)3 United Way member agency.
