visionary leaders

Named for the founders of Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club, the Martin L. Mathews and Hubert

"Dickey" Ballentine Leadership Circle is a generous group of Mathews-Dickey’s most generous supporters.  As founders, these two visionary leaders oversaw the growth that has provided a beacon of hope to more than 1 million children over the last 60 years.

The mission of the Club is to produce physically active, well-educated and hopeful young people, with families at the center of our effort.

Its sports teams, academic resources, after-school activities, career readiness programs, and above all its overarching culture – the “3R’s” of Respect, Restraint and Responsibility --have trained, educated and shaped the lives of children and families in our community.  Some of those children have gone on to become famous sports stars. But many more are doctors and lawyers, school teachers and coaches, policemen and ministers, musicians and dancers.

Through its programs, Mathews-Dickey strengthens St. Louis and its families by providing:

  • Year-round, direct-service programming to over 3,500 young people and indirect services to more than 13,000 of them, ages 5-18.
  • Recreational and educational opportunities not only in sports but in the arts, academic enrichment, character education

        and healthy living.

  • A safe place that builds community and offers opportunities for the future.

More than 7 in 10 of the children come from families whose income is less than $29,000, roughly the poverty line here for a family of four. More than 4 in 10 come from families making less than $15,000.

Membership in the Leadership Circle starts at $1,000 per year and helps to provide the resources to supplement membership and activity fees for those children unable to pay as well as support to provide the programs to serve the children.
